What To Wear? Students Rights and School Dress Codes

FreeThis lunch and learn workshop is free of charge, but seating is limited, so registration is required.
Our attorneys will discuss what schools should know about the First Amendment and students’ rights when crafting and enforcing dress code policies.
Over the past year, there has been a rise in student activism, including the display of messaging that may be, at times, divisive and inconsistent with public schools’ educational mission. Looking specifically at dress code policies, we will answer the following questions:
- – What are the boundaries of student activists’ right to First Amendment expression in public schools?
- – What are the parameters of public school authority to direct student activist toward more positive messaging?
- – How can school administrators direct student activists toward more positive messaging without First Amendment violations?
