Requests for service animals are becoming increasingly common for public schools. In this session, KingSpry Attorney Erin D. Gilsbach explores the legal issue and provides helpful tips, tools, and best practices to enable schools to make timely and legally-defensible decisions regarding service animal requests.
This Lunch and Learn will address the following issues:
- How does the law define “service animals”?
- What are the rights of students, employees, and visitors with respect to service animal requests?
- How does the “service animal” law intersect with general ADA and/or Section 504 rights?
- What parameters can/should schools establish with regards to service animals?
- What policies/procedures should schools have in place?

- What happens if a service animal request poses a conflict with a student/employee pet allergy issue?
