This month you will see blue ribbons and pinwheels to raise awareness for child abuse prevention.
This is much more than a feel-good event. The effects of child abuse are long lasting and pervasive. Four children die every day from abuse or neglect. Those who survive are at heightened risk for chronic health problems, mental illness, and incarceration. Those who survive child abuse and function well, do so despite their early experiences.
Experts estimate the cost to society from the long term consequences of child abuse is more than $100 billion a year. We can do better by raising public awareness of the risk factors and signs of child abuse and by providing support and education to families.
