We are proud to announce Episode Twelve of our education law podcast, the Legal Lunch Room, “School Athletics.”

Each episode, we invite education attorneys and school leaders to share how current education law trends and court decisions impact school boards, students and our community.
On this episode, attorney Alyssa Hicks and Dallas School District Superintendent Tom Duffy are with us to discuss athletics and its impact on the school community and we cover a lot of ground.
“Our athletic program is a major part of our school culture,” Duffy says. “We’re a relatively small district in northeastern Pennsylvania… and all of our sports at the varsity and junior high level are incredibly popular.”
The conversation covers everything from community usage of campus facilities, safety concerns, eligibility requirements, booster clubs, and training for coaches, including coaches who may not be teachers off the field.
Hicks notes, “The biggest thing to remember is that non teacher coaches won’t have the type of training that our teachers receive multiple times per year… so we want to make sure we have those non teacher coaches receive appropriate training, particularly when it comes to the Child Protective Services Law, mandated reporter requirements and things of that nature.”

They also get into a fascinating debate about the pros and cons of online ticketing systems.
Hicks shares, “I have to say that as a third generation Nazareth Area School District grad, my 85 year old grandfather has a lot of Blue Eagle pride, and he will never be purchasing tickets online.”
