The KingSpry law firm in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is proud to announce Episode Nine of their education law podcast, the Legal Lunch Room, Part One of “What It Means To Serve On A School Board.”
Each episode, our hosts invite education attorneys and school leaders to share how current education law trends and court decisions impact school boards, students and our community.
Joining us for this special two-parter are Bethlehem Area School District Board President Michael Faccinetto and Parkland School District Board President Carol Facchiano. We covered the importance of their role as board members, and how they work with their superintendents, solicitors and the public.
Noting that school board service is an honorable path, co-host Rich Campbell began by asking the two board presidents to share how and why they came to be involved.
“I don’t think there’s a more important elected role than the school board,” said Faccinetto. “Most decisions made at the local level are the ones that really impact you.”
The conversation also explored the mechanics of running a public meeting, especially when those comments might be tough to hear.
“I feel comfortable in the role of running a school board meeting that is respectful, productive, listening to everybody,” Facchiano adds. “As president of the board, you have to be the glue that holds your board together.”
Also lending insight were school solicitors Jessica Moyer and Jonathan Huerta, who shared how their role supports the board so they can lawfully carry out the business at hand.
Part Two will air October 16, when we will discuss Sunshine Law, transparency and good advice for new school board members.
